-Diffusion: This works by the smallest particles colliding with gas molecules, which in turn slows them down, making them stick to the filter and not pass through it.

While there are other types of filtration systems available, HEPA systems have proved to be among the most effective and are used by a variety of HVAC systems and vacuum cleaners.

According to the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, (IEST) with regard to performance, there are 6 types – A, B, C, D, E & F. Each has its own distinct characteristics.

A HEPA filter is only as good as its gasketing and framing when installed and because all HEPA filters are used in critical applications, in-place HEPA filter testing should be mandatory.

HEPA filters do need to be changed periodically in order to be most effective. However, given that the cost is not very high, and significantly cheaper than treating the effects of bad indoor air quality, they are well worth the modest extra investment.
